Fascinating historical overview of shop sales staff in the UK from the mid 1800's to 1960's. Not only addressing sales staff alone but the facts that war, depression and social standing had on business. Could say more but don't want to spoil the read. If you like history, this is an easy, enjoyable and education read.

This is a nicely done telling of the evolution of the role of women in the retrai trade, an important and underlooked topic. Lots of detail. The book should be of interest to people in Women's Studies-related fields,as well as those who like Victorian history. I would have liked a lot more photographs, and there are a couple of little errors, like calling Sir Cosmo Duff-Gordon (who survived the Titanic sinking and whose wife was an important early British dress designer) Cosmo Gordon Duff. Still, informative, and well worth the money.
