McDonald Publishing and the Imperial War Museum teamed up back in the late 1960s and early 1970s to publish this tight series of illustrated paperbacks on the history of World War I, World War II (and a few other conflicts of the 20th century), which were picked up by Ballantine in the United States. They were all divided into subjects: battles, campaigns, weapons, war leaders, politics in action, human conflict, and regalia, by color bands on the bottom, enjoying common editing and artwork, and a fairly common collection of well-known historians. They cost $1 at the time (a good deal of money) and a lot more now (being out of print). The series as a whole is slightly outdated by the disclosures from Allied codebreaking, and suffered from being whipped together in a hurry, but they remain then and now a fine introduction to conflict in the 20th century -- if you can find them. The Hitler Youth was the Nazi regime's best tool to mold the minds and bodies of the young men who went off to fight Germany's wars, particularly the Waffen SS, who drew an entire armored division from former HJ. That outfit, the 12th SS Panzer Division, ran up a fine record of combat effectiveness and a harrowing record of butchering PoWs.Ultimately, Hitler Youth numbered among the Reich's last defenders. When everyone else lay dead or had surrendered, they fought on, firing Panzerfaust anti-tank rockets against advancing British and American Cromwell and Sherman tanks. Only when these boys saw their cities destroyed and were led to the concentration camps did they realize they had been duped (the book's title) and betrayed. How the Nazis turned young boys into fanatical machines is the topic of this book, and author H.W. Koch combines the experience of having been a Hitler Youth with an excellent array of research. He delves into the founding, organization, and leadership of the HJ, its programs, which ranged from fostering anti-Semitism to military training, its relationship to Germany's education efforts, as well as its dissenters and opponents amng youth. The final chapter describes how the HJ served in World War II, an environment that shattered the twisted dreams of Hitler and his youth and forced the misguided children to face reality.I'm not too familiar with more recent books on the subject. There's a pornographic industry about HJ youth and Bund Deutscher Maedeln being encouraged to have early sex so as to provide the Reich with armies of the future, but I suspect that's overheated propaganda from dirty old writers. However, this book is an excellent, tight, well-written account of one of the most ghastly things ever done to the youth of a nation.

More than twenty years ago, I read this short and book, here in Brazil. This book is about the Hitler Youth, until its end. And this book has these great things:1- This book is short and concise. In fact, about half of it are its photos. All photos are black & white.2- This book doesn't has wrong informations about the Hitler Youth.3- This book is for everyone to read.4- You can read all this book, in less than three hours.5- This book was printed, when persons that belonged to the Hitler Youth were still living, and is an original source, about this subject.Problems of this book:1- About the female brand of the Hitler Youth, there isn't enough informations.2- There isn't an comparision of the Hitler Youth and the Communist Union of Youth - Komsomol. Both with similar will.

This was written by a man who, as a boy, was very briefly in the Hitlerjugend, and who therefore had to rely mostly on books like any historian would have to do if he were not an eyewitness. He gets the age of Norkus wrong, he says that Norkus died at age twelve, when actually he died at fifteen. He also says that the founder of the NSDAP was Adolf Drexler, but the correct name is Anton Drexler. Otherwise he seems not to have made any mistakes. There are numerous illustrations of a high quality and interest. This book is part of a series of illustrated paperbacks on "the violent century."

Good work on the brain-washing of an entire generation of youth. Provides pros and cons of how and why this happened and includes efforts of those who tried, and failed, in fighting back.
