This is a classic I missed reading in my younger years. The story takes place during a winter in the mid 1800s in Holland and contains a little more Dutch history than some kids may have the patience for, but this old-fashioned story is wonderful and would be a good read through the holidays. I know a lot of home-school mom's like me who would recommend it as a read aloud. I have the Disney movie of it but was waiting to watch it until I finished the book.

I can't believe I didn't read this as a child! If you like historical fiction, and a good story to let your imagination go to work, this is for you. My mother bought it because she read it as a child and just wanted to enjoy it again. She had me read it, she read it and now another friend is reading this book.

I had never read this story before, even though I had heard some things about it. Honestly, it is wonderful to read the descriptions of the countryside and to read about typical boys during that age. I wouldn't want to live there, but the land and the people sound fascinating.

    Absolutely loved this book.

Was surprised when I realized how little of the book was the story of the skates and the race. The story seemed to merely provide an excuse to provide geographical details of Holland with some preety detailed historical stories. But it was interesting and very informative and I enjoyed reading this "children's" classic. Glad to have got around to reading it.

It is a classic but is written in old English so is difficult to read.

This is a classic. I read it years ago in elementary school. It is just as enjoyable today.
